JELLYFISHES

Jellyfish??? Are they really fishes?

No, jellyfish is not actually a fish, as a fish has backbone (kind of) and are vertebrates but jellyfishes are some kind of  dome shaped creatures with tentacles. They are more closely related to sea-anemones and corals. Researchers called them fish before, when proper classification was not possible. They can be called as the oldest animals, around 650 million years old. They look exactly like jelly while floating so the name "jelly". They are found in variety of size and shapes with small microscopic to huge ones.

But....There is something very interesting

Jellyfish has very interesting things in store. Could you imagine our body functioning without a brain, heart, lung or any other organ? No you can't. Jellyfish has a fascinating body organisation as it does not have  Brain, Lungs, Bones, Heart etc. But they have teeths and eat other animals (small creatures) of the sea. Instead of brain they have nerves to sense and detect temperature, oxygen, food and danger. Heart is not required as there is no blood to be pumped. Respiration is through very thin skin, no digestive system required as all basic transport is through skin only. Bones are not there so they have irregular body shape which also makes them lazy and slow swimmers.

They have a good defense system (stinging with tentacles). So beware of them, in beaches as some of them are poisonous. Some of them reproduce sexually and some asexually.

Jellyfish is 95% (approx) water so if you keep it open in the beach it will evaporate just like water.

Bioluminescence

Bioluminescence is a biological phenomenon through which jellyfish glows in the ocean. It occurs due to various chemical reactions occuring in the body especially due to the presence of molecule luciferin which reacts with oxygen to produce light. Not all but almost 50% of the jellyfish show this property. They use this property in various ways and one of them is for distracting the predators.
